Kathleen's Christmas present for this year.
Anything music related is easy to please her with, since she's the official music guru of the family.
But I also wanted to make her something she could put up in her room, either at home or on campus - so I made her a poster, in some of her favorite colors.

The real poster is 18x18 inches

Holiday Invitation

This is the invitation for the open house we had this year.
I love love love that I didn't have to use red and green! Neither mom or I wanted to use "christmas colors" on it if we didn't have to.

Words Request

Made this one for Mom's friend Gloria.
Apparently there's an inside joke involving she and words, but I'm not really sure how the story goes. Mom thinks it's hilarious, either way.

Have I mentioned I love red?

Typography 2 - Exercise 2

We had a couple of mini-projects in typography this term, as well as our big projects.
The first one was an analysis of a magazine, where we had to find out the underlying grid (grid = the plan, kind of like an architect's drawing, used to organize all the pieces of the design on the page(s) ) used in the spread (spread = two facing pages in a publication)
THAT one looks boring (it's just a print out of lines - bleh)

The SECOND exercise, however, was exciting, open-ended, and very fun.
We were given a list of typographic terms (basic things we will need to understand or at least recognize when we do typography work from now on) and told to make a glossary... and when we all moaned about how boring that was Mary Ann told us we were free to do whatever we chose as long as we followed the design rules (using a grid, working closely with the setup of the words themselves on the page, etc)
I did an accordion fold - a HUGE one - with a little box to hold it.

The sqaures are each 3x3 inches.
The entire thing is 162 inches long...!
I had to contain the darn thing (it kept escaping and flopping open, wreaking havoc on the contents of my room) so I built it a tiny 3x3 inch box with a cover.
Fits like a GLOVE - then I added the matching bow to the top to keep the box interesting, and VOILA!

Typography 2 - Project 3

I have officially gone cross-eyed twice and fallen asleep at my desk three times since beginning this project. But it's done, and boy am I proud.

Project 3 was to create a book from scratch, using the article we had written about our famous typographer! We had to do everything (dedication page, acknowledgments, copyright, everything)

Mine is filled with dummy pages (basically just blanks) to make it thicker.
It's about an inch thick, and its covered in a gorgeous piece of suede. I want to snuggle it, but it's a book... not a teddy bear.
(The cover is a dust cover - I wasn't about to ruin that nice suede with printing...!)

The dust cover (as you can see from the actual image of it) printed a lot darker than the original file (which happens a lot when you go from screen to printer, one type of paper to another, or even between two different printers)
Thankfully it didn't do what it sometimes does and completely change the color (I've had blues print green before...!) and the darker brown turned out to be awfully nice.

Ooh baby, baby!

Tim and Becky are expecting their first baby this February, and since Tom and Agnes (who are undoubtedly going to turn out to be the most spoiling grandparents in existence) were nice enough to hold the baby shower on the weekend I'm visiting I thought I'd make a present for the Momma-to-be.

Electronic Landscape - P1

Talk about developing a severe hatred for quotes.
In this project we had to literally steal quotes from people, not list their names, and make a website with some deep philosophical meaning from it.
No original words allowed AT ALL.

Anyway, as much as I hated the not giving credit thing (and, for that matter, the having to give it a meaning) here's what I made:

I made mine revolve around connections - either abstract or obvious.
It's about as deep as I could go without losing my mind.
