C.U.E. - Project 1 - Urban Lexicon

For one of my lecture courses this term, Communication in the Urban Environment (which I shortened to CUE), we had to do a group project.

We had to create an "urban lexicon" - a collection of words that describe a city.

Each group member was given a specific letter (it worked out perfectly since there are 26 people in the class) and told to think up words beginning with that letter, and then go take photos of things/places/etc. in a city (Toronto or another) that fell under that word.

My "group" was only two people: myself and Neti.

We were given F and G as our letters. Neti took F. I took G.

We then gathered up our pictures and made a slideshow.

What you're seeing in the picture is a compilation of all those slides.

Obviously all the photos under words starting with the letter F belong to Neti, and those under words starting with G are mine.

Design and Image - Project 1 - Much ado about Boots

Finally another design project complete!

This the the first project for Design and Image. The class is exactly what the name suggests: designing around images.

For the first project we had to pick an everyday object and come up with at least 50 different concepts for it (I chose boots, so come of my concepts were types of boots, materials, tools to make them, anything else called a "boot", fashion, etc.)

Then out of those concepts we had to create a 20-page accordion presentation.

We could use: 20 separate images. Or some separate images and some larger ones that took up two pages. Or all large images...

It depended on the photos you chose and how you wanted to organize them.

This thing is... well it's massive.

It's only 5 inches high - but it's 100 inches long!

Mind you, when it's all folded up it's 5 inch x 5 inch and 1.7cm high - but stretched out is TERRIFYING.

Quite possibly the most fun? Making the little box.

Absolutely nothing to do with the project other than making it look a little more like boots - it's black cardstock lined with white cardstock, and fastened with a buckle. I love free time.

Claire as Belle

My little sister's friend got the lead role in their theatre production of Beauty and the Beast.
So I made her a picture of herself as Belle, in the gold dress from the Disney movie.

This thing is massive.
I started with a teeny drawing of Belle from the movie, and proceeded to use it as a base to create this one. I had to resize and re-draw it three times before I could get enough detail into Claire's face to make it ACTUALLY look like her.
But in the end all that mattered was that Claire loved it.

I can't wait to see the actual show.
With all luck I'll be able to get that night off work!

Her Ladyship - WIP

I just wanted to post this one since I liked the sketch so much.

(just ignore the watermark - it's for the other site)
She's not actually finished yet - and there are things I'm going to end up changing later - but I'm proud of how it looks none the less.

I'm thinking of coloring her to look like (or at least be the colors of) a Madagascar moon moth/comet moth.
They're like Luna moths (the lime green and hot pink beauties you can find every once in a while in NB) but instead of green they're sunshine yellow, orange, and rust colored.

A touch of lime

This is what happens when you have insomnia and a pencil at 3AM.

I really wish my ability to draw would manifest itself at more human hours of the day.

I might print her out on a big sheet of glossy paper and turn her into a poster.

I'm planning on painting my room lime green when I go back home for reading week.

I sort of cheated with this one (it was early!)

I found fabric swatches and used those instead of trying to color the fabric by hand.

Usually I'd chose the coloring yourself option, but this time it turned out alright.

This version is different from the one on my other site (in case any of you saw that one already)

I didn't really like how her hair ended up, so I re-did it without all the highlighting.
